THE HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF JAZZ AND POPULAR MUSIC
1890-1940

This ebullient presentation gives a marvellous grounding as to where and when jazz, and today's popular music, came from. The Nighthawks consist of outstanding personnel, steeped in these Jazz-History styles, attested by scores of broadcasts and recordings. The many multi-instrumentalists add to the colour and depth of their sound spectrum.

To study classical music without the foundation of the early Classical Masters such as Scarlatti, Bach, Hayden, Mozart etc would be unthinkable, and we passionately believe the same of our music. This is a chance to hear the very best of jazz, from its inception. Was jazz born in New Orleans? Yes, but it certainly grew up in Chicago, New York, Kansas City & others.

A 5 album 122 track CD compilation by the Nighthawks is available, along with an accompanying Styles and Repertoire guide sheet, indicating which numbers on the CDs have matching scores. In addition a further quantity of numbers in our repertoire can be backed up by a separate CD, containing the original period recordings from which the accurate transcriptions are based. By taking three sets (£120) you obtain copying rights for cutting individual tracks for students' personal use, in school, or at home. Any scores you require are available at a nominal price of £23 per score including postage. All CD sets come with comprehensive band cv, track details, personnel sheets, reviews, three A4 photos, and Repertoire Sheets. Any Individual parts required: £4 each, which includes postage.

Most arrangements are for an 8 piece line-up :- trumpet, 1st clarinet (doubling soprano/ alto/tenor), 2nd clari (doubling soprano/alto/tenor/baritone) trombone, piano, banjo doubling guitar, bass (written mostly for tuba), & percussion. Several have additional third sax and second trumpet parts, the odd one has a violin part too. There are a few six or seven piece scores. You could split the doubling parts into singles.

This is a unique opportunity to hear a riveting outfit, with exceptional presentational skills, portraying a music which was the bedrock of today's developments. The Nighthawks' comprehensive coverage of the multifarious styles of this era is unsurpassed, and the resultant euphoric enthusiasm of students is proof that a "Study of the Masters" has filled a sorely needed gap in their musical education.
For a day to remember, and an inspirational insight into real jazz, the Nighthawks are unbeatable.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Carl Spencer.
