Jazz Magic
by SPENCER'S NIGHTHAWKS ORCH (1997-2006)
and SPENCER'S WASHBOARD KINGS (1964-1971)
122 Track, 5 album collection
A dazzling collection of the myriad of jazz and popular music styles of the Ragtime to early Swing eras, namely 1890 to 1940, featuring many leading figures in the UK jazz world.
The ease with which the band could slip into the many varied black, white, small and larger band modes has always been one of its strongest points, and in its lead clarinet/sax player, Brian Hills, we find one of the finest exponents of the styles of these periods. The front line partnership between Brian Hills and Carl Spencer has been a constant factor since the band's inception in '64, and has been a main contributor to its core sound.
These recordings, stretching from some "resuscitated" studio copy tapes from '65, to the delightful Jolson Medley featuring Mike Parle on banjo, recorded mid 2006, highlight their incredibly versatile range.
On the jazz side, sit back and enjoy the styles of The Original Dixieland Jazzband :-(Margie, Darktown Strutters Ball) The New Orleans Rhythm Kings:- (Angry) The Original Memphis Five:- (Shake it and Break It) The King Oliver Creole Band :-(I ain't Gonna Tell Nobody, Mabel's Dream, Sweet Lovin Man) Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers:-(Kansas City Stomp, Beale Street Blues. The Chant, Dr Jazz) and on through Bix Beiderbecke's:- I Need Some Pettin, Susie, Rhythm King, Goose Pimples, to his later bigger band outputs such as "Borneo". Listen to the Luis Russell Band's "Saratoga Shout", Ellington's Mooch and East St Louis; King Oliver's Dixie Syncopators :-Someday Sweetheart, Aunt Hagar's Blues, Sweet Emmalina, and the splendid multi- layered, swinging Deep Henderson. Embrace London's Savoy Havanah Band, The Happy Six, Clarence Williams Blue Five and later bands, Freddie Keppard's Jazz Cardinals, the Johnny Dodds, Jimmy Noone & Sidney Bechet small bands, The Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, McKinney's Cotton Pickers, and the Fats Waller groups......all these Classic Jazz & Dance masterpieces are served up by the Nighthawks in their own inimitable, ebullient style.
Add in an array of original scores (nearly all the bands' arrangements and transcriptions are by Henry Davies) in the style of the roaring, carefree, fun- times of the early and mid 1920's (Button Up Your Overcoat, A Cup Of Coffee, Somebody Stole My Gal, Miss Annabelle Lee, California Here I Come) plus two dozen or so brilliantly featured soloists (Muskrat Ramble on the SOUSAPHONE???) and you'll see why the Nighthawks and their forerunners the Washboard Kings have retained the premier spot in the Classic Jazz and "Hot Dance" fields.
Amongst those featured are :- NEVILLE DICKIE- MARTIN LITTON-KEITH NICHOLS- HENRY DAVIES- COLIN GOODE- BOB HUNT-SPATS LANGHAM - CHARLIE SMART - KEITH STEPHENS - MIKE PARLE - RAY WORDSWORTH - BRIAN HILLS - MAC WHITE- TREVOR WHITING - MELT KINGSTON- BILL ODDIE. (vocal on "Five Feet Two") + DON WELLER, (Bass sax on four tracks).
